The existing phone system, designed for transmitting people's voices, is not ideal for computer signals. Modem use is possible, but the future hope is ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network), a system of phone lines optimized for sending computer information.
Has good basic information and great detail on ISDN protocol

This book has good basics on ISDN, and has a great section detailing BRI and PRI ISDN protocols for voice, data and video calls for call setup and teardown. The book goes well beyond materiel related to "Internet Connectivity", the equipment list dates to 1996, and is dated, but the concepts section more than makes up for it. The book is a must have if you want to know more about what goes on "under the hood" when you place an ISDN call.
