Wow! The illustrations in this book blow me away. First, my only gripe about the book is that it starts way too early -- with flying insects, dinosaurs, birds, and mammals. Those pages are yawners. I *think* they might have been included only to work in a few more gorgeous illustrations... in which case, all is forgiven. The illustrations are *beautiful*. Then the book gets serious looking at the technology of flight -- flying hunting weapons, flight legends and myths, kite technology, flying experimentation, and finally human flight. Oh, it's marvelous. Then follow pages and pages of improvements and explorations and warfare and rocketry. Did I mention the illustrations? It is so wonderful to sit down with a child and open a book with illustrations like these. I have got two aviation-obsessed people in this house, and this book is a hit.
Good overview for flight fanatics

My son is five years old and has been intensely interested in planes for at least two years. This book is a big hit with him. I like it because it gives him more of a historical perspective; he's old enough now to understand that people had to learn many things before they built successful planes, that planes have changed over the years, etc. There are nice little tidbits of information that we've never seen in other kids' books before, so that keeps both of us interested, too.
