Martin Beck had no idea when he vengefully kidnapped Paul and Beth Gilman's ten year old son, Timmy, that he had kidnapped his own son. Martin, Paul and Beth had been close friends during college. Martin and Paul had planed on starting a business together. One night, after too much booze and drugs, Paul seduced Beth, whom he had a romantic crush on, which was not reciprocated. After Beth discovered she was pregnant, and angry with Martin for taking advantage of her, she accepted Paul's offer of marriage, and her secret was safe. Martin, the brains behind the venture, that would prove a cheaper way to refine crude oil, and Paul, with his business acumen, did go into business. A business that should have made both men very wealthy. But Martin suspected that Paul was not being honest, and after he discovers that Paul had copyrighted his process, which made Martin rich, but not as rich as he should have been, he devises the plan to kidnap Paul's son. Martin's only problem was the ruthless person he had chosen as an accomplice. Sammy Stein, aka as Igor, because of his unfriendly appearance and manner. When Beth discovers that Paul was supporting another family in Shanghai, where his and Martin's business was located, she filed for divorce, and the settlement made her a wealthy woman in her own right. True to her son, she allowed Timmy to spend summers with his supposed father in China. A decision that made Beth uneasy each time she had to put her son on a plane. She dreaded flying herself or she would have traveled with her son. On the last trip, after much anxiety, Beth has her friend Judy accompany her to the airport. And they place Timmy on the plane to Shanghai. While waiting she and Judy have drinks in the airport bar where they meet Lloyd Bennett, an ex-cop. Lloyd is quite taken with Beth's good looks, and Beth, vulnerable and desperately in need of companionship, see a good person in Lloyd. When Beth gets the news that Timmy's plane has disappeared, she is suicidal and cuts her wrists. Judy saves her. When she receives a ransom note demanding five million dollars, Judy suspects a sick scam and consults Lloyd, who has connections with his cop friends.
