A little bit outdated for 2008

"Instrumental Methods of Chemical Analysis" was one of only a few standard books on Instumental Analysis in 1969. It is a good book and offers a good overview of the techniques that were in use at the time. Ewing's original expertise was, mostly, in the electroanalytical techniques. Thus, electrochemical methods take a slightly larger share of space than other techniques that had become more important by 1969. Dr. Ewing was a pioneer in Instrumental Analysis and we should not short-change this book. Of course, today we have moved on to more and more mass spectral techniques, high performance electrophoresis, and various high performance gas and liquid chromatography methods. Instruments have become more sensitive and samples tend to be smaller. Finally, all of these techniques now rely heavily on computerization that became available in the 70s and 80s. Nevertheless, this is an important reference book for the library of anyone who intends to specialize in instrumental methods of chemical analysis.
