The theory and practice of modern information storage and retrieval, with an emphasis on more recent advances in the field, is covered in this book with the focus on how to design and build systems that will be effective for the user while still providing the information in the format easiest to use. Additional coverage includes privacy and the freedom of information, the requirements of a networked environment, and user profile modeling.
Korfhage does an excellent job covering a wide variety of storage and retrieval methods, providing the reader a well balanced overview of the field. The extensive references at the end of each chapter make further research very easy, however, most chapters are quite technical and will satisfy many readers' needs. The only shortcommings were the lack of case studies and somewhat brief coverage of internet search engines, relatively minor gripes for such a broad-ranging book.
An excellent choice!
