The servants' quarters in many National Trust properties are particularly well preserved, giving an insight into how a country house and estate was run in the 18th and 19th centuries. This book looks at the roles of the housekeeper, her maids, the butler and the cook. Wherever possible, the author cites specific individuals to illustrate their roles, such as Mrs Garnett, the housekeeper at Kedleston and Mrs Wes Coad, who presided over the late Victorian kitchen and larders at Lanhydrock.
As with all National Trust publications, don't miss it!
