HOPE IS A DIALOGUE-A DESCRIPTION These pages explore some of the most central issues of our lives. They seek to define conscience, its imperatives and its limitations. They search for the new paradigms we need to live lives that are authentic and contemporary. In the light of the articles on conscience and paradigms, these pages explore through Galileo's telescope, as it were, the verification of new centers for our lives. Our moral behavior must not be essentially defined in natural law and biological centers; nor must the Church be defined as the center of the universe or of our lives. All revolutions that are truly worthy connect us with the past that they surpass and leave. An especially delicate article, Hope Is A Dialogue explores the question of whether Jesus was married, calling Jesus Joseph's son rather than Mary's child. The sadness of life is evoked in "Crosses in the Early Darkness" and the loss of those we desperately loved in "Homily for My Mother". The status of married priests and of marriage as well as priesthood is explored. And redemption is defined in another article, as the salvation of our integrity. The unifying theme that weaves its way through these reflections is the passion we are summoned to follow, a passion to make ourselves at home with ourselves so that we can inclusively welcome all those who seek a home in our friendship and faith.
Dr Anthony Padovano gives hope to Catholics, who were deeply influenced by Vatican II. I was looking to be educated about the past and present history of the Catholic church and was not disappointed. It takes time to erase the tapes of past instruction and reading books like this one not only educate but also empowers one to move forward. As the church moves away from Vatican II teachings and towards a more conservative position, books like this helps one to think. His many different chapters will enlighten any reader who is interested in human rights in the church, power, sex and church structures. Reading the book gave me a sense of hope for the community that makes up the church. Even as we go through the dry period, we must lay the bricks for the future. I walk away from the reading more fortified as a warrior for Christ. Roberta Paul Horton
