Great Read for the Non-Purist, Beginner Muzzleloading Hunter

For the big game hunter raised on high-power metallic cartridge rifles, I consider this book essential if you are relocating to a state that only allows muzzleloader or shotgun slug hunting. If you're on the fence, as I was, between investing in rifled bore specialty shotguns/barrels, versus stepping into muzzleloading, this book will help you understand the advantages of modern muzzleloaders over shotguns. Toby Bridges goes to great lengths to help the reader understand the development of rifles and projectiles for various big game applications. While I intend to find and read a similar work from a rifled-barrel shotgun slug advocate before making any major purchases, I closed this book at the end with what I am confident is an objective understanding of the capabilities available from producers of in-line modern muzzleloading rifles, as well as what I can expect from various projectiles in the current market. While likely of little interest to the buckskinner or 19th century (or earlier) purist, "High Performance Muzzleloading Big Game Rifles" taught me just how close I can legally get to scoped centerfire rifle performance once I make the switch to a modern muzzleloader - and how little the restrictions on the former by my new home state's laws will affect my hunting experience. If your big game hunting experience is solely with centerfire rifles, and you expect to move to any jurisdiction which disallows them, I strongly recommend reading this book before buying either a shotgun or muzzleloader. I believe it will save you a lot of money, as well as frustration from trial & error, in the long run.
