An insightful and fascinating portrait of Queen Victoria, from her childhood through her adult life, detailing her personal life and relationships with friends, family, and the public. A "vivid"... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book was well-written, and kept my interest, by adding little bits of personal information, charm, and many details about Queen Victoria's life. I had no idea she liked to play with dolls, and by learning this, through the book, it gives you insight into the many contributing factors to her personality, and rule. The people surrounding Queen Victoria, when she was a princess, well, their stories are such a good addition to the whole reasons as to why the Queen was, as she was. Not boring, like some history books out there, very readable and it will keep you coming back. I've already ordered more titles from Carolly Erickson. I'm excited to know I'll be learning more history, with such a good author.

This book is very well written. THere are many similies and metaphors which put you back into the life of Queen Victoria. It is an educational book, yet it reads like a story. It is most definetly not like most historical non-fiction books.

This is a very well-written and researched biography. Queen Victoria is vividly brought to life and her colorful era brilliantly conveyed. Quite an enjoyable read!
Very Readable

This book was very readable, enjoyable, and historically fascinating. It was not as indepth as one would expect of a monarch with such longevity or for a woman with such fascinating children. But for your history buff that doesn't have time to be a scholar this was the must read book about Victoria. It provided a glimpse of her personal and public life and showed the world what "Victorian" really meant.
The Queen is dead, long live the King!

What a marvelous book! Oh to be a college freshman again and have this for summer history assignment! Is it presumptuous or what to put a vast historical panorama in 264 pages? But Erickson does it with great style befitting her intrepid subject. A word to our fictional freshman: be sure to look up the big words, be thankful there is an author not afraid to use them; don't try to remember the geneologies, time for that later; visualize that last chapter death-bed scene, unsurpassed in its poignant prose. Thanks, Ms. Erickson, for a great work.
