I used this textbook for an intro course in the Linux Operating System at a technical college. We covered the first 12 of the 22 chapters. The book includes a copy of the RedHat distribution of Linux, and the first three chapters are an in-depth walkthrough of the installation procedure. Each chapter includes a section review of multiple choice and true/false questions. Also provided are all of the answers in an appendix, not just the odd numbered questions, which is a big help. Starting with chapter 4, each chapter also includes a multi-step Hands On exercise demonstrating in very easy to understand format how to implement or utilize the features of the OS. 1 The Linux Operating System 2 Understanding hardware, partitions, filesystems and devices 3 Installing Linux 4 Desktops and Terminals 5 Linux Filesystem and Shell 6 Linux Commands 7 Getting Help 8 vi editor 9 PATH and Shell Configuration 10 Adding Disks and Partitions 11 Using Filesystem Commands 12 Users, Groups, Permissions and Attributes The remaining 10 chapters deal with backups, X Windows, Scripts, Processes, Logs, Networking, Printing, Software, Kernel and Modules. The book is clearly written, easy to follow and not overwhelming in the use of jargon. However it does deal with all the major topics needed to fully utilize this OS.
