J. Campbell Bruce wrote this story while serving as a war correspondent in China in last year of WWII. It depicts three days in the lives of P-51 pilots serving in southern China protecting the cargo planes flying the "hump" from India to China. Bruce was a veteran newsman on the San Francisco Chronicle and was the author of numerous magazine articles and several books including "Escape from Alcatraz" basis for the Cling Eastwood movie of the same name.
