Grace King wrote between 1865 and 1920, giving her views on the southern temper and cultural contribution, views that supplemented those of other writers of the period. The anthology provides a full range of King's writings, including chapters from her biography, Memories of a Southern Woman of Letters, and her major short fiction, including five uncollected stories and the best of her Balcony Stories. The book features a large portion of The Pleasant Ways of St. M 1/2dard and selections from her historical writings, which include sections of New Orleans, the Place and the People. Bush also compiles a series of King 1/2s biographical sketches of Mark Twain and others, excerpts from her notebooks, and the first publication of a group of more than twenty letters.
