Goats are even-toed ungulates (hoofed mammals) that belong to the genus Capra of the bovid (Bovidae) family. Each of the several goat species is endemic to Asia, Europe, or northern Africa. The domestic goat is either a subspecies of the wild goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) or a separate species (C. hircus). It was one of the first domesticated species and continues to play a significant role in human society. Food (milk, meat, cheese), fiber and skin for clothing, brush and weed management, and religious, folkloric, and mythological symbolism are just a few of the many ways in which goats assist humankind.
