Ghost Force A Hit!

I read a review prior to purchasing this book. I've read many Robinson books so I was very surprised at the vitriolic review which was very nasty and personal. After reading the book, and it was a real thriller, I can only guess that the nasty review I had read was from someone who abhored the obviously passionate conservatism of the writer. His respect for Maggie Thathcher and disgust for the liberal labor gov't. in England was hardly veiled. Nor should it be. This book is one you won't easily put down. Much, much better than the Clancy Psuedos of late. I give it a double thumbs up!!!

It just gets better

Patrick Robinson, gets better with each new adventure. The lead characters are all back again, the formidable Admiral Morgan, Lt Commander Jimmy Ramshave, my favourite Aussie. The Navy SEALs, the British SAS, who would want to be on the other side ? The maps and detail are a real plus, saves me having to get the Atlas out Regards An Aussie downunder.

Robinson knows how to write a thriller

Patrick Robinson is without doubt one of the best military thriller writers today. Admiral Arnold Morgan, the retired NSA head who still seems to boss everyone, including the President, around is in place, along with bright-faced Lt. Commander Jimmy Ramshawe, the precocious personal assistant to the current NSA director. Another author might be stretched to make these two characters plausible, but Robinson pulls it off: barely, but he pulls it off. But in a Robinson thriller, it doesn't matter because Robinson plots tightly and the action is simply non-stop. At a White House dinner, a Russian government official literally drops dead. He's been poisoned. This opens the main theme which is that the current masters of the Kremlin fear demands for Siberian independence and the loss of Siberian oil supplies. So as they rid themselves of rebellious Siberians, they hatch a plan to help Argentina capture the Falkland Islands, where it just so happens, gigantic oil reserves have just been discovered. The fact that they are licensed to ExonMobil and BP is a minor inconvenience. The Argentines sieze the Falklands and a much weakened Britain tries to reclaim them. The naval, air and special forces action is hot and heavy. Robinson is as good or better than Clancy was at his very best. His characters may not be entirely believable, but who cares? Patrick Robinson is simply superb when it comes to describing not only combat itself, but the preparation for and aftermath of. He's just flat-out great. There's lots of political chicanery in this novel as well, which adds to the fun. Overall, a first-rate military thriller written by the man who is quickly emerging as the master of this particular genre. Jerry

Ghost Force

This was my first Patrick Robinson book and it was great. I liked it so much I just ordered Hunter Killer, and may order Nimitz Class soon. I have read reviews where some have compared him to Clancy and I would agree. It appears Clancy has retired from writing his own novels. Is he sick or just lazy. Keep up the good work Patrick.

The Empire Strikes Back II

Ghost Force renews the battle for the Falkland-Malvinas Islands and cleverly brings back the Russians--always a reliable foe--as the enemy. Robinson's setup is a bit labored--the Russians want Argentine-provided Falklands-Malvinas oil as a backup to their Siberian reserves--but it gets us there. "There", of course, is action in the South Atlantic following a second Argentine invasion of the Falklands-Malvinas that is no more implausible in concept or timing than the first one. As in 1982, the US supports its greatest ally, the United Kingdom, when the Empire--such as it is after of a few years of a fictional Labour government--tries to strike back. Admiral Morgan and his wife, the astoundingly perfect Kathy, young LCdr Jimmy Ramshawe and the rest are back--for better or for worse. Either way this smart imagining of a second Falklands-Malvinas War is just fine for a rainy day.
