Another favorite story from my childhood. When Linda finds a stray dog and her puppy in the woods, she has no idea that the dog is a champion show dog. Young readers will enjoy the story while also learning about dog care and the world of dog shows. The main character, Linda, also faces a difficult decision concerning Gabriel's future, but readers should understand that Linda makes the right choice.
One of the best fictional dog books out there...

This book is incredible. Even though it is not a horse book, anyone who has read and likes a good horse story is sure to love this. A girl is forced to move out into the country, and is unhappy and argumentative, until she discovers an orphaned pup in her woods. The pup, Gabriel, is named for the angel because of the light markings over his shoulders that resemble wings. While learning to care for him, the girl adjusts to her surroundings. To pay Gabriel's expenses, she takes a job down the road at a large show kennel where she quickly learns all the work that goes into turning out champion show dogs. One day when Gabriel is grown up, he follows her to the kennel- and much to her surprise, what she thought was a mutt turns out to be a purebred Keeshond. This delightful story follows the girl and Gabriel as they uncover his past, and give him a wonderful future.
