" Marshall] understands that the neighborhoods and cities that no longer exist can be conjured by memory and reanimated by art."-- San Francisco Chronicle "Born in Brooklyn of Arabic/Jewish heritage,... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is a great book that reflects the mindset of the Syrian Jewish mother and the enviroment of the post depression and its effect on how the Brooklyn Syrian Jewish communtiy came to be the way it is. Although exaggerated and with twists of insanity, the author portrays her essential role in helping him grow as well as wrecking havoc in his life. He also talks of all his adventures growing up and how the syrian immigrant viewed the new Ashkenazic Jewish and new American world at the time, both foreign worlds to this group. It is also a humbling book to this community's experience and reflects the modest beginnings of a lot of families. This book should be mandatory reading at Magen David High School in Brooklyn. Marc B

Marshall's writing reached deep into my core. He was unafraid to write of issues we have all felt, and thus, made me address matters within my own family. I laughed, cried and learned along the way! Every person with any history or family will love having the opportunity to read this book.
