Fire reflects his schoolboy desire to become a blacksmith, during the extremely cold winter of 1946-47; Earth - 'Amabile' - is the speech of Simonetta as Primavera from Living Creation, his play on Botticelli and Medici Florence; Water, Summer, recalls the June Concert on the river Cam by Clare Bridge sung by the Cambridge University Madrigal Choir; and Air, the climax of his 1961 poem Perennia, a duet.
