Foodchain was a great thriller that kept me rapidly turning the pages. I can't believe this is one of Jeff's first novels, it reads like a grizzled veteran of the craft turned this out. Don't expect a lazy cozy mystery, this thing has some gruesome scenes in it that makes you feel every page. The characters Jeff creates almost walk off the page they feel so authentic. Take an afternoon and go on the crazy journey that is Foodchain. Highly recommended. Happy reading.
A great first book.

Jeff Jacobson's foray into fiction is to say the least incredible. From the opening line to the end, you are thrust into the hero's flaws, startling revelations, and eventual realizations. Nothing about this novel is common or mundane. It's original and reflects today's struggles with trying to make it and compromising your own morals to survive. This is not a coming of age story, but a story about the choices a man makes and what he is willing to do in search of his own redemption. Frank, the hero, is on the run from the mob, barely escapes being killed and is thrust into a backwater town where the mob might be better. Frank is just trying to survive, wrangle up enough money to escape, but one simple scheme snowballs beyond his control. From lesbian mothers to homicidal maniacs disguised as executives, Frank just wants to get out. When he finally gets his chance, will he become just as corrupt and morally bankrupt? Even after reading it twice I couldn't decide. There are those in the book who I cheered when they got their due. But in the end it is Frank who is changed forever by his own choices for both good and ill. If you want the standard cookie cutter story being churned out everyday then don't buy this book. If you want something new, something that will make you think, then this is the book you want.
