Part of 'The Collected Traveler' series, this volume enables readers and travellers to immerse themselves in the traditions and timeless allure of the southwestern part of France. It covers money, accommodation, car rentals, telephones and renting appartments.
First off this is not a Travel Guide rather an amalgam of stories and excerpts from books. But a very useful counterpoint TO Travel Guides. It gives a real personal sense of some of the places in this part of France because i is not a Travel Guide. Having just spent a week in Biarritz I wish I could have read this before I had gone there. It is really quite insightful but really varied as well because the article are taken from a range of sources; food magazines, authors, travel critics. I found myself cross-referencing places mentioned in this book with a Michelin Red Guide and a map. It really is great reading

At last at book for the prospective traveler who enjoys great travel writing and a superlative bibliography and glossary to whet the appetite. This is a book to savor before the trip to get the flavor in delicious detail. It is also a reminder that at one time many of our best magazines had memorable articles by the best travel writers that one could save and file away for future reference not just these "info-bytes" we are subjected to more often than not nowadays. Barrie Kerper has gleaned the very best for us to read and edited a book of the "crème de la creme". Now to read the rest in the series!
