great book!

Great pronunciation book! I highly recommend it to everyone who wishes to improve his or her pronunciation and listening skill.

Focus on Pronunciation 2 by L. Lane

A good, clear text for ESL learners. Pictures of lip/mouth/tongue position very useful. Half the units are segmentals & the other half on stress and rhythm/intonation. Pick n' choose units b/c there's way too many to get thru in one semester (3 hrs a week). As another reviewer noted, it's a little skimpy on production exs,. but the creative listening & oral exs at the end of each unit are valuable & fun. One drawback: price! Our jr college bookstore charges $41 retail for this book and that's too much for many students. Used copies often don't include 2 CDs.

Excellent texts

The Focus on Pronunciation books by Linda Lane are excellent coursebooks for the classroom. The layout is clear and logical, and I found the full front drawings of lip position particularly helpful. (I never could make the profile view intelligible to students, but lip position is more than half the battle.) She utilizes the standard techniques, but also has some interesting ideas for activities. The rhythmn and intonation sections are a bit skimpy; you'll probably want to do more. Overall, a solid, logical, clear student text.
