his archetypal story of adventure in Montana involved carving and paddling a dugout canoe along the Missouri River like the famed explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Author Tom Elpel was privileged to live out this long-time dream when he connected with Churchill Clark, the great-great-great-great grandson of Captain Clark. Together they whittled a 10,000 lb. Douglas fir log down to a 500+ lb. canoe. Tom led a five-month "Missouri River Corps of Rediscovery" expedition, paddling this 2,341-mile segment of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail from Three Forks, Montana to St. Louis, Missouri.

Fantastic photo illustrated book of epic 2400 mile canoe trip down the Missouri river in a hollowed

Love this book! Elpel and the 4th great grandson of Capt. William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame chopped out this log into a beautiful canoe, then paddled her 2400 miles to St. Louis. I've never read ANY paddling book with over 700 color photos before! WOW, who puts this many images into a book? Great to see all the images along the route traveled by Lewis and Clark. These guys did a lot of natural foraging for wild plants too, which was great to see. Really well done book!
