I received this book as a Christmas gift. What a delightful surprise! The characters are intriguing. The plot deals with intense human emotions - strengths and frailties. Kathy draws you in with her riverboat story. I am looking forward to Kathy's second book, Jasper Mountain.

First, There Is a River was recommended to me, so I am in turn highly recommending it too all! Kathy Steppen is a gifted writer! Her character detail and story telling ability is captivating! The book kept me on my toes, and never went in the direction I was anticipating it to go. Just a great read!

Kathy Steffen writes with such attention to detail, I found myself surprised not to be on a riverboat when I put the book down (and putting it down was difficult)! Her characters were very believable, the situations in which they found themselves true to their persons, and their resulting actions in line with their personalities. I, too, cannot wait for Ms Steffen's next book.
