A fast-reading thriller with an extrasensory twist, told by a rebellious gypsy boy who lives by his wits--and his fists. When rogue gypsy boy Freedom Smith runs into trouble with the law, he strikes a deal with the police: Instead of going to prison for a crime he didn't commit, he'll go undercover -- and underground -- using his incredible strength and boxing skills to infiltrate a nefarious, high-tech fight club known as The Bear Pit. His mission: to save other street children from the terrible fate the Pit has in store for them. Freedom thinks he can trust Java, his newfound friend, with his secret life. If only he knew that this high-spirited, upper-class girl has a secret of her own....
In short, action filled chapters, Kate Wild delivers up an exciting book with interesting, fresh characters. Freedom, aka Fred, a gypsy boy with an urge to fight and an urge to stay out of trouble finds himself lured into an illegal fight ring in which he is called upon to sort out his loyalties. With a style reminiscent of Stormbreaker (Alex Rider Adventure) and other Anthony Horowitz adventures, there is plenty of suspense and action between police, bad guys, questionable characters, and the protagonist. Contrary to what I feared, fight scenes do not over power the book, and there are some colorful, strong female characters to round out the story. One word of caution, there are quite a few "PG rated" swear words, but they fit the story and, unlike some young adult books, are not included just for shock value. Although a few of the plot twists seem improbable, Fight Game is a great read. Hopefully the hint of a sequel will become reality!
