Fascist Italy is a concise introduction to the phenomenon of Italian fascism and its impact. The author balances an up-to-date re-evaluation of political, diplomatic and military developments with a full assessment of the more neglected domestic and cultural dimensions of the subject.
The perceived horror of Mussolini notwithstanding, Whittam seems to present a succinct yet highly instructive account of the arc of experience of Italian fascism, delivering a good sense of the many different groups vying for hegemony in the movement, with nicely realized, short, but incisive, descriptions-explanations of such groups, their origins and aims. Thus the reader quickly gains a sense of the continuing flux among the movement's elements (some often near-antithetical), with-- after early tentative moments -- Mussolini, the super-hero, in the center, juggling those roiling forces. Definitely a good introduction.
