At thirteen, Haley Lloyd has not traveled to exotic lands or seen the world's wonders...not yet anyway. She is in love with one place, however: her family's cottage on the coast of Maine, to which they migrate each June from their home in South Carolina. There, the rocky beach offers a new lesson every day on the life of the sea, and the wind and tides speak to her like the voices of the fishermen who have plied these waters for ages. This summer is different, though. Her father is not with them, and her mother has at last told Haley what she has suspected all along - that her parents are planning to split up. Despite the faithfulness of her best friend, her dog Festus, she finds herself filled with all sorts of thoughts and feelings she has never known before: anger, loss, confusion... Just when it seems that the summer is turning out to be her loneliest one ever, she meets Walter Theodore, a local lobsterman, who is in need of a good stern man for the season. Haley accepts his offer but soon comes to realize that this experience will hold more for her than just a weekly paycheck. She must learn to cope with the punishing physical demands of the fishing life and the vagaries of weather on the northern Atlantic, as well as the hostilities of the rival lobstermen who prowl the same rugged coastline. Her mentor is a gentle man, however, and the friendship she forms with him provides the strength she needs to get through the most difficult summer of her life thus far. Walter Theodore has much to teach her, and his wisdom and worth reach far beyond the confines of a small boat on a vast sea.
