A fun, informative read!

I'm a homeschool mom, and was looking for interesting, informative books on world deserts for upper elementary/lower middle school children. Most books I found were either too elementary, or only on American deserts. "Explorers Wanted!In the Desert!" was perfect. The information is presented as if the reader is going exploring in the desert. Throughout the process of his (or her) trek, the reader is offered several choices and/or courses of action. Answers and rationale follow on the next page or two. Intertwined between the choices and the answers, is an engaging discussion of the journey. Somehow, the author tucks in an incredible amount of information about the Sahara desert, dune formations, terrain, people of the Sahara, animals, and more. If you're looking for a text with endless lists of dull facts, don't buy this book. However, if you enjoy repeated cries of, "Hey Mom, did you know that...?" then this is the book you want.

Inside you can open up your imagination and take a journey into the desert with our author Simon Chapman. You will prepare for your trip, being told all that you will need and what you may expect to find once there. As you travel you will learn about the dangers of the desert, such as heatstroke and scorpions, to name just a few, and what to do about them. You will meet desert people and learn how they survive such a hostile area and you'll do all this in a great entertaining way. This is a wonderful book, taking children on a learning adventure without them having to leave their chair. Descriptions are vivid, illustrations are great and the facts are given in a fun interesting way. I recommend this for you and your children. A great learning experience. Very well done.
