Determined to find out more of Roberts past, Georges visits Alain, thedangerous upperclassmen who has a grudge against him. Alain tell Georges aboutGrace, the girl whom Robert loved - and whom Georges exactly resembles. Secretsare revealed and friendships are tested in this new installment of La Esperanca.
I'll admit that while I always enjoy this manga when I'm reading it I never quite reached that level of "must have more now" that I get caught up in with other titles. After this fourth volume though this is no longer the case. All the character building and plot lines finally pay off in this one. Georges, disturbed by yet deeply curious about Robert's breakdown at the end of the last volume is determined to get some answers. Unable to get them from Robert, who is self-destructing, he goes to the only other person he can think of who knows: Alain. However, this may be a decision he regrets since the boys own feelings toward Robert are less than amicable and he has his own motives as far as the past is concerned. I don't want to give anything away but needless to say things don't go the way Georges thought they would and he is left wondering what it all means. Is it really him that Robert sees or is he still just chasing Grace's shadow? Esperanca has been building up it's characters and they really shine in this volume. Georges is more forward and decisive about things, Robert is haunted more and more by his past, and in perhaps my favorite moment of the whole volume, Henri (whose selfless friendship really touched me throughout) gives Robert one heck of a wake-up call. It may have moved slow getting to this point but it was necessary and this is the volume where that pays off. La Esperanca really is amazingly well written and I confidently recommend it to anyone who enjoys good character driven stories. I can't wait to see how things develop.
