That Rare Thing: an Excellent Textbook

Excellent textbooks are rare. This one fits the bill: clear, concise, relatively complete, even-handed, insightful, and up-to-date. Here's a passage to illustrate the kind of thing you get: "Interest groups are sometimes confused with PACs. PACs are interest groups that focus on influencing elections rather than trying to influence the elected. Interest groups are also different from political parties: Interest groups concern themselves with the policies of government; parties concern themselves with the personnel of government." To be sure, the book is pitched at a relatively elementary level, but it includes excellent references to current scholarship for those who wish further reading. I recommend this book.
