Handy introduces us to some of the most fascinating characters in the Bible, offering insightful reflections about the common plot lines and literary device woven into these stories, their mixture of historical and fanciful elements, and their theological message.
In this book, Handy gives readers an overview of a number of Old Testement and Apocrypha stories, not as facts, but as stories. He presents the archetypes, both in plots and in characters. He explains the probable origins of the stories, as well as what they can (and cannot!) teach us about God today. And, thankfully, he gives us a good overview of each of the stories. (I say thankfully because as a Protestant, I have almost no experience with the Apocrypha. Now I'm going to get myself a Catholic Bible!)
