A study on why so many "ideal" marriages fail

This is a fascinating look at why modern society places such an emphasis on marriage and long term relationships. Julian Hafner looks at the historical reasons behind this as well as the individual psychology which leads to unrealistic expectations and often destructive relationships. The book is filled with case studies which provide an almost voyeuristic insight into other people's lives and emotions. Although my partner found the book somewhat biased against men, I thought it was well balanced, with many thought provoking ideas, particularly regarding roles within relationships.
