As the ambulance with Eli and Ashley left Women's & Children's Hospital in Lafayette and $$ eastward journey on 1-10 toward New Orleans, Ashley prayed that God would spare our son. Eli lay on a portable bed with an IV taped to his left arm and hand. He looked so small and vulnerable and innocent. Ashley sat next to him, holding his right hand, praying, hoping, studying his beautiful face. A paramedic sat nearby, observing mother and child. Tired and weak from the ordeal, Eli fell asleep soon after the ambulance got on the road. When he woke from time to time, Ashley would hold his hand and speak softly to him with words of reassurance.
