It is driven by ideas, motivated by individual dispositions, its progress is determined by constellations. Those who brought about its initiation and try to simplify the complexity of the resulting interdependencies by looking for addressees and attributions through cognition and affectation are unaware of the extent of its determining power. A sociology of the elementary forms of social life aims to verify the origins, forms of expression and functions of sociality in their respective context-specific form. Elementary forms of social life arise as "Wechselwirkungen", or reciprocity (Georg Simmel), as configurations of obligations and commitments and are based on the human language and on the tendency to commit and self-commit embedded in human communication.
