A young girl, the youngest of eleven, broke the rules to write some soldiers stationed around the world in WWII. She decided to help their morale from a tiny coal mining town in the hills of Kentucky. One of those soldiers was a Michigan boy stationed in Australia. Their casual letters and pictures soon turned to love letters. They'd never met, their worlds were vastly different, yet their love grew over the course of three years of war and a gulf of 10,000 miles. Dusty, a half breed Dingo/dog, saved Joe's life and the lives of his squad in Australia. They became inseparable, and against all odds Joe fought to keep Dusty. The two headed to the States in September of 1945. They went straight to Kentucky where Dusty became Hazel's protector. He defended Hazel and Joe in every situation. Two months later, following a string of failed job attempts, they married, with Dusty in attendance, and left her enormous family to start their own. Dusty, loyal and courageous, continued to protect them and their two small boys until the day he died.
