I was turned on to Lake's work by one of his short stories in another collection, and to my immense delight I was not disappointed by 'Dogs in the Moonlight.' Lake's work immediately reminded me of the works of Joe R. Lansdale in many ways - the affection for Texas both as a locale for the stories and a place for weirdness to occur; events in the stories being so bizarre as to require a second read just to make sure that you caught everything; and a very subtle, black sense of humor throughout just about all of the stories presented. The one story that really stood out to me was the one that was closest to being a miss - "Twilight of the Odd." The biggest reason for this is that while I caught some of the references to Norse mythology I'm not sure how apparent this might be to a more casual reader, which would make the story significantly less enjoyable (and significantly more confusing).
