'I have 30 days to decide whether to have an affair.' This line, uttered by Carolyn O'Keefe, lures P.I. Kristin Ashe into following & investigating the woman Carolyn plans to pursue. From the start,... This description may be from another edition of this product.
For me, the criteria for a great reading experience is: character development, pace, and an ending that stays with me for days. This worked lacked all three, and yet I enjoyed it -- up until the last 30 pages. The opening chapters were superb. Imagine being a PI and having this looming figure walk into your office, toss $10,000 your way and tell you that she wants you to investigate a woman with whom she wants to have affair. Imagine your horror when she boldy announces the name of your lover. So many possibilities here, and as I'm reading these early chapters, I keep thinking to myself that this can't possibly have a happy ending. So for nearly 200 well-developed pages we follow the agony of the main character. And then something very strange happens, as if the author didn't know how to end the story. Indeed, I didn't see how it could end, which is what kept my interest for those 200 pages. But the ending left me feeling empty. To the author's credit, Fran Green is a really likable character. Though some of her comments are beyond belief, her wit is consistently sharp. In addition to providing comic relief, Fran keeps Kristin grounded -- something Kristin frantically needs throughout the better part of the story.
