Not completely up-to-date, but a real good textbook on Digital Satellite Communications

Unfortunately, the 1997 edition of the book is only a reprint of the edition from 1983. Thus, it is not really up-to-date, especially with regard to current (higher order) modulation techniques used in digital satellite communications (like e.g. 8PSK). However, as an introduction to both the theory as well as practical aspects of digital satellite communications, I find it an irreplaceable textbook. For example, it is ideal to understand the meaning and significance of eye diagrams and how to interpret them. I also like the very good explanations on Nyquist's theorems very much. Pulse shaping and all its implications is also very well described. Also the impact of nonlinear amplification on digital modulation techniques is uniquely well described. The chapter on error detection and correction coding very well describes the relevant aspects. Also the concepts of regenerative systems are very well introduced. There is a lot of figures as well as measurement screenshots that contribute to the practical aspects. The writing style is very likable and easy to read.
