Despite the common opinion of church-age Christians, Dr. Schultz maintains that the book of Deuteronomy is not the narrative of a never-smiling God and a frightened, timid nation. Rather, the love of Jehovah for His people is the heart of the Old Testament book.Deuteronomy: The Gospel of Love offers a simple but thorough exposition of this important though frequently overlooked divine record. Bringing rewarding insights from the original Hebrew text, it puts heavy stress on the love relationship between God and His specially chosen people. This commentary reflects a rare grasp of the Hebrew language and the Old Testament Scriptures. It will aid any student or layman in his personal investigation of the character of God as seen in His patient working with Israel.
This is an excellent introduction to one of the key books of the Old Testament and it has an interesting sub-theme. Most people think of reading the Law and solemn sermons by Moses in Deuteronomy, but Samuel Schultz does a brilliant job of exposing the true character of God as it is revealed in the book of Deuteronomy. Dr. Schultz shows the reader the importance of God's love in the covenant relationship and how God requires not just legal compliance with a code, but love in return. The second chapter of this book is the most important and helpful. It is here that the author unpacks the many aspects of the love relationship encouraged by the book of Deuteronomy. After having read this book, my perspective on Old Testament history has been permanently changed. Dr. Schultz opened up the book of Deuteronomy for me as the gospel of God's love as it was delivered by Moses.
