Unexpectedly Awesome

Never heard of the author before- bought the book based on the cover and a blurb. Whoa baby- where to start. First, it's set in the UK, so some of the slang etc. is a tad off, but nothing big. Besides that, this is like a Stephen King book, except well edited and tightly plotted. It's dark dark dark, there are scenes of shocking violence, and grotesquerie, but an overarching mystery. The gore and violence is paced about right for my taste: enough to keep you on your toes, but not so much as to become numbing. Many unexpected twists, surreal scenes, and well described dread- tons of atmosphere. Not depressing or hopeless though, as the main characters are struggling to find some meaning and resolution in the midst of the insanity. I really don't want to give anything away- if you read to the end, you'll be taken on quite a ride. Great characterization, great imagination- I will DEFINITELY be reading more by this author.
