Book Overview

A new book of poetry from internationally acclaimed, award-winning and bestselling author Margaret Atwood

In Dearly, Margaret Atwood's first collection of poetry in over a decade, Atwood addresses themes such as love, loss, the passage of time, the nature of nature and - zombies. Her new poetry is introspective and personal in tone, but wide-ranging in topic. In poem after poem, she casts her unique imagination and unyielding, observant eye over the landscape of a life carefully and intuitively lived.

While many are familiar with Margaret Atwood's fiction--including her groundbreaking and bestselling novels The Handmaid's Tale, The Testaments, Oryx and Crake, among others--she has, from the beginning of her career, been one of our most significant contemporary poets. And she is one of the very few writers equally accomplished in fiction and poetry. This collection is a stunning achievement that will be appreciated by fans of her novels and poetry readers alike.

Margaret Atwood the Poet is Back and As Good as Ever!

What a pleasure to find Margaret Atwood back in form, producing as good of poetry as ever, after a hiatus, in “Dearly”! These are all new poems, and I eagerly consumed them like candy. As always, Atwood has a sly good humor, a wonderful dry wit, behind her verse; she’s delightfully frank and funny and calls things as she sees them! These poems had the additional meaningfulness of moving me with how graciously she has come to terms with old age and growing infirmity, grief for the loss of loved ones, dealing with memory and regret, the struggle to remember one’s fast fading past. It’s heartfelt, personal poetry, coming as it did right after the passing of her longtime partner Graeme, to whom it is dedicated. It’s a great collection to pleasurably renew one’s acquaintance with Atwood, or to become a first-time fan of her! She may be older and grayer, but this collection shows her to be just as good as ever!

Margaret Atwood is 81 years old today! The renowned Canadian author has been publishing poetry, novels, nonfiction, children’s books, and more since 1961, but her star just keeps on rising. Known largely for books like The Handmaid’s Tale, you may be surprised to learn that speculative fiction actually represents a small fraction of the versatile author’s work.
