Wrightson art and Niles Noir--winning combination

While not a very long story (4 issues), the combination of classic Swampthing horror artist Wrightson (who is just as good as ever) and 30 Days Night scribe Niles make an excellent escapist tale. The story is a perfect marriage between horror and pulp detective story and fans of either genre should definitely give this a try.

Noir meets horror

Leave it to Steve Niles to meld noir with his trademark horror, along with a liberal sprinkling of dry humor, to concoct Dead She Said, a Sam Spadesque detective yarn that takes a serious wrong turn into the macabre. Hard drinking private eyes waking up with hangovers is part of the genre, but rigor mortis?! Risks do come with the territory in this line of work, but when one is hired to tail a man suspected of adultery, he may not expect him to wind up being a mad scientist with some serious despicable secrets. This sordid and sardonic story successfully incorporates many different styles, but is regrettably all too short, with the engaging and evocative noir unfortunately taking a disproportionate back seat to the horror towards the end. While the ghoulish and ghastly is obviously Niles' forte and its' precedence here should come as no big surprise, in the process of writing this tale he just may have found another genre to further explore. Move over Azzarello and Brubaker.
