First Time for a Swim

Written and illustrated by Nick Ward, "Come On, Baby Duck!" is a story about a little duck, who unlike most of his kind, is afraid to go swimming. It's not that he doesn't want to do it -- at first he's very excited about the idea of his first swim. At least, he's excited at first, but when comes time to actually go swimming, he begins to find the water deep and scary. Will he be able to overcome his fear so that he can have a fun time swimming? On the whole, a fairly common story that has been done in a number of ways. Ward, however, adds drama and excitement to the story when Baby Duck is forced to confront his problem in a very head-on way. The highlight of the story, however, is not so much the story itself as the illustrations. The Baby Duck character and his teddy bear, Teddy, are drawn in a very appealing way and Ward adds plenty of depth and excitement to the story through his action-packed illustrations. Overall, the illustrations work to propel the story from somewhat average children's book fare to something a bit more memorable. This review is the fifth in the series "Agent0042 Goes Ducky," in which I review books featuring cute duck or duckling characters. The fourth was Duckling's First Spring.
