Raised in a provincial English suburb during the austere years in and after the Second World War, I longed to explore the world outside. With little exposure to science during my schoolyears, I was also fascinated by the world of science and technology and longed to become part of it. This story shows how I fulfilled both longings.

In it I have tried to share my enjoyment in traveling to places far from the tourist track and meeting colorful characters in very different countries and cultures. I have also tried to show my excitement in getting to know advanced technologies from electronic steam irons to supersonic aircraft. This book is for all who share such dreams
