Booker Prize-winning novelist Penelope Lively, author of Moon Tiger, creates a powerful love story and a meditation on the city of London. Architect Matthew Halland, divorced and lonely, falls in love with editor Sarah Bridges, and their relationship becomes the core of this engrossing novel. As Matthew constructs the new face of an old city, he desperately works at building a fresh emotional life for himself on the ashes of his old one."
This is the finest book I have read this year. It is an urbanphile's dream and is for those who have lived and absorbed the wonders of cities past and present. One floats through time and space and although this book is set in London it takes little imagination to site it in Paris, Philadelphia, or Prague. I found it superior to her Booker prize winning novels. What a joy.
