This would be a terrific book to use during discussions on China or during the Chinese New Year. Note, this is not a Chinese New Year book but it mentioned on page 22. This would be a great book for younger children for the teacher to read first and then pick out what they want to use and also for older children lets say up to 3rd or maybe 4th grade. There are beautiful photos and interesting facts in little fact rectangles. Here are the chapters in this book. Each chapter is only 2 pages. Where is China? When did China become a country? What type of government does China have? What kind of housing does China have? What are China's forms of transportation? What are China's major industries? What is school like in China? What are China's favorite sports and games? What are the traditional art forms in China? What major holidays do people in China celebrate? What are the traditional foods of China? What is family life like in China? * Only mention of the 1 child law is by a photo that reads " By law, most families in China have just 1 child. It does not say why. Also included in the book are: Pie chart on ethnic backgrounds of people in China, Fast facts on China - official name, population, land area, capital city, average annual rain in Beijing, language, Average temperature in Beijing in January and July, National resources, Religions as well as China's flag and currency in 2004 in both US and Canadian dollar value. On page 30 is 6 basic words in English - Hello, goodbye, yes, no, please and thank you. It then shows you how to say the words in Mandarin and then how to pronounce the words. There is a glossary that covers the words: calligraphy, communism, dynasty, martial arts, nomad, porcelain, tai chi and yurt. On page 31 there is a intenet site called facthound [...] and you type in the special code for this book [...] and it will lead you to more information on China and also gives you 3 more books on China as well. Also in this Fact Finders Q & A (Questions and Answers); series is Afghasnistan, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Iraq, Japan, Mexico and Russia. This is a really cool book and the library binding really makes this book quite durable.
