I live in North Carolina and I am not of Scottish ancestry. Occasionally I drink a wee bit of Scotch for medicinal purposes mind ye. This past Christmas I received a bottle of Clan MacGregor Scotch from my in-laws. Browsing for a good book to read I spotted a reference to the MacGregor Clan on the back cover of Nigel Tranter's Children of the Mist. I hoped it would be interesting to learn about the MacGregor's. I like good historical fiction. I loved this book. Tranter brought Chief Alastair, "himself" to life and wonderfully weaved a compelling story with so much significant history. I had trouble putting the book down and when I did I got into trouble for attempting to speak like a Scottish Hielantman. The book ends in Edinburgh, the only place in Scotland I have had the opportunity to briefly visit. I am anxious to read some other of Tranter's books. For me Children of the Mist was a great place to start. I highly recommend this book, whatever.
