This book is a favorite in my cooking-crazed family. I pull out this cookbook for all special events, whether it's Derby Day or Thanksgiving, and it is great year-round. If you've never been exposed to burgoo, benedictine, the Hot Brown, or spoon bread, this is the cookbook for you. I love the classic mint julep recipe as well. Mr. Patteson's narrative is charming, and unlike some cookbooks with that kind of narrative, the recipes are great throughout. The book is divided into various themes such as different holidays, the Derby, or recipes from well-known Kentucky inns and hotels. It is the kind of food I remember my grandma making when I was a child and it does not disappoint.
