The South African government is forcing Naledi an the other villagers to move to a new location: a "homeland" of iron huts and barren soil. And it seems that no one is willing to resist. No one, that is, except Naledi's friend Taolo, whose family has often spoken out against apartheid. Taolo gives Naledi the strength to fight, and with his help, she and her schoolmates organize an anti-removal march through the village. But the right of free expression is not a liberty granted to the young protesters, and the police instigate a reign of terror on the villagers. Naledi and Taolo's chain of fiery resistance cannot be broken, though. With each new crisis, it grows ever stronger and burns ever brighter.
Chain of Fire, written by Beverly Naidoo, is a book of the past, present and hopefully not the future. The villagers of Bophelong are forced to move to a place unknown to them, and they are forced to move even if they don't want to move. Naledi is just a 13 year old girl that is afraid yet strong. Taolo, a young boy with a father that has been to jail, comes along as a freedom fighter and tries to help the villagers there. Taolo and Naledi fight this struggle with a fight that is like a chain of fire, building and strengthening. The illustrations, by Eric Velasquez, are placed a little off, yet they completely enhance the book. The reader will experience the emotions of sadness, fear, strength and will have a sense of what true power and cruelty really are.

(5) Illustrated by Eric Velasquez Chain of Fire is a very promising book as Naledi's character seems to be growing stronger physically and mentally throughout the book. As the talented author Beverly Naidoo penned this book, the reader could easily tell that the thoughts and feelings were deeply carved into the characters' minds and bodies. This unique novel has moved from Apartheid, to the people's thoughts, to the situations, to the settings and so on. Separation was in bulky portions in this fresh realistic/historic fiction set in South Africa. Chain of Fire is a paramount novel for every reader as it takes the reader to a voyage in that point of time.
