The athletic nickname "Purdue Boilermakers" dates back to a newspaper headline from 1891 when Purdue's football team shut out in-state rival Wabash College. Since then the "burly boiler makers" of that headline have gone on to become a powerhouse in football and basketball -- carving out other rivalries and traditions along the way.
