With no more than two words on each page, wildly colorful illustrations tell the story in this playful book about a family backyard barbeque and a spotted dog who only wants a burger. Dad and son prepare the juicy morsels of meat as the dog looks on, his anticipation (and drool) building each time a burger is served to a guest. And just when it seems the poor mutt is out of luck, a surprise ending leaves everyone satisfied. Readers will delight in the dog's suspense, and with fewer than forty-five words throughout the text, Bun, Onion, Burger makes a perfect read-aloud treat for toddlers.

I purchased this book for one of my friend's sons and he loved the illustrations and the story. His Dad likes to grill so it was as if he was following along as his Dad cooked. It was cute to watch him read it and understand the rhymes as he went along. Anything that gets kids to read is an A+ in my book.

My 4-year-old daughter got this book as a birthday present from her uncle (he gave it to her at her birthday barbecue!) and she absolutely loves it. The text is sweet, the illustrations are adorable...and it's just good, old-fashioned fun!

Peter Mandel And Chris Eliopoulos have matched the spirit of the season with the imagination of the new reader in Bun, Onion, Burger. Using a perfect balance of colorful, retro illustration with limited text, the story is very readable and encourages imaginative questions. By using a single word in place of the often longer phrase the young reader gains confidence and is encouraged to re-read this fun book. A great gift idea when you are invited to the next summer BBQ, and on my grandchildren gift list !

Now that summer is here, my kids (ages 5 and 3) insist that we cook burgers and dogs on the grill at least twice a week. When I saw Bun, Onion, Burger, I knew they'd love it -- and they do. My wife reads it to them while I man the grill, and then they insist we read it again at bedtime. And I think this book is the reason why we're now grilling 3 or more times a week. It may not be great for my cholesterol, but the kids really do love it.
