fabulous AND wholesome

This is a fun, zippy book for the tween and early teen girls. As a mother, what I like best about this book is that contains the kind of lessons we all try to teach our kids: be kind, be true to yourself, stick up for yourself without becoming a pushover. But it doesn't have that icky preachy aftertaste! I thought Brand-New Emily seemed true to life (without being gratuitously dark); I bet its younger readers will feel the same way.

Smart, Fresh, and Funny

What teenaged girl hasn't, at one time or another, wished to re-create herself? In BRAND NEW EMILY, the author takes a familiar middle-school problem and puts a fresh spin on it. Emily is a smart, resourceful character that will inspire girls to go out and take charge of their "image" with or without a p.r. team. With spot-on dialogue and characters you genuinely care for, this book entertains and inspires. Go, Emily!

8th grade girls as they really are

Emily is the new girl in town, but worse than that, she's the target of the uber-classy "Daisies," who take every opportunity to humiliate her. Fortunes begin to turn for Emily when she discovers that her uncle the cop is working security for hot young actor Colby Summers. Emily wangles an intro and an interview, and then embarks on the boldest adventure of her life - the re-branding of Emily, now known as "Em." With brilliant - and almost unbelievable assistance from Colby's publicist, Em sets out to beat the Daisies at their own game -- and is surprised at the outcome. The author's knowledge of the way 8th graders talk is so current and so accurate that as soon as teen conversation styles change, this book is gonna be, like, so a loser. Get it now, before it's outdated! I wasn't surprised to learn that the author teaches middle school English and is immersed in teen conversations every day. On the whole, highly believable social behavior and language, but a bit over the top with the availability of a superstar to a teen. Girls 11-14 will love it.

Loving Brand New Emily!

Finally! Teen fiction that's smart and funny. Beyond a great storyline, Brand New Emily offers a searingly honest take on the power of fitting in and finding yourself--and how those two very important parts of growing up are sometimes at odds with each other. Emily is the character we recognize and admire--even when she's less than perfect, and possibly because she is. You can tell the author has plenty of experience with the target market. Rue has produced a story that's authentic and compelling. Great gift for tweens because it addresses a lot of key behaviors without being preachy. I've read it a couple of times and I get something new every time.

Riveting!

I really enjoyed Ginger Rue's book Brand New Emily. I especially appreciate the way the author speaks teen. The lingo is priceless. It either takes you back to your own teen years, or helps you immediately relate to the modern teen crowd. I found the plot line to be very "grabbing". It's easy to get into the story immediately, and before you know it, the book is finished! Each new chapter is packed with hilarity or drama. Finally, the message is excellent for any modern day teen: that public image does not make a person. Let's face it, every human being struggles or has struggled with desire for popularity, and/or at least acceptance among peers. Brand New Emily challenges the reader to examine his/her own values higher than our own selfish ones. I enjoyed the tie in with Frost's poem "The Road Less Traveled." It brings depth to the point. Rue also insinuates that each person has deep seeded problems, needs, and deserves to be treated with respect. In essence, any teen would strongly benefit from these challenges and messages.
